13-year Old boy Shoots Himself to Death on Instagram Live

What is the world turning into? A 13-year old boy from Forest Park, Georgia by name Malachi Hemphill has shot and killed himself live on Instagram. This brings back the inevitable question, is social media a blessing or a curse?

According to report Malachi’s mother Shaniqua Stephens heard a loud noise from her son’s room and rushed upstairs together with the boy’s sister only to find him in a pool of blood.

“We kicked in the door. We found him just lying there in a pool of blood. My daughter screamed and said, ‘Mom turn his phone off!’ As I proceeded to look at his phone he was on Instagram Live,” Shaniqua said.

Forest Park Police said they responded at about 10:40PM. Malachi was rushed to Grady Hospital where he died. “This is just a pain that will never go away. He was my only son. He was just only 13. Just the thought of me seeing him on the floor will never leave my brain,” Shaniqua said.

She added that it was an accident and immediately after that, about 40 or 50 of his friends rushed to their house. “There was about 40 to 50 kids outside. I guess these were the kids that were watching on live that live in the area. I guess when it happened they just ran over here,” she said.

She has been told that someone asked why he didn’t have a clip in the gun and told him to put a clip in the gun. “As he put the clip in the gun, that is when the gun went off,” she said. Shaniqua said she was told Malachi got the weapon from a friend who got it from someone else. The police said it is consulting with the Clayton County D.A.’s office, and charges may be filed, depending on where investigation leads.

Malachi’s stepfather Ernest Stephens said: “I can happen to the best parents, it can happen to the best people. The best ones that loved their kids, you know? I just always let them know about situations and decisions.”

“(The) Detective asked me yesterday, ‘What was Malachi’s Instagram name?’ I couldn’t tell him what Malachi’s Instagram name was because he would make up so many different pages. Monitor their phones, just monitor your children. More now than anything,” Shaniqua said.

We think it’s about time parents put in extra vigilance on their kids because social media has become a double-edged sword, it can be favourable and unfavourable depending on how you use it.
